Bay Island Driftwood Museum
Bay Island Driftwood Museum, one of the most popular attractions in Kumarakom is founded by Raji Punnoose, a school teacher in Andaman and Nicobar Island. The museum is one of its kind and is quite popular for using advanced contemporary art techniques in order to design different kinds of tree-trunk as well as root sculptures.
The museum also has other interesting exhibits including wonderful sculptures made from driftwood such as stumps, trunk of tree, roots and so on. During her teaching days, Punnoose herself collected the exhibits. The collection at Bay Island Driftwood Museum has exhibits in the different shapes of reptiles, animals, amphibians, fishes as well as birds.
The museum also listed in the Limca Books of Records because of being the only driftwood museum and for the wonderful techniques that were used by the curator. The objects were carefully collected from the Andaman seas and its beaches so that they can be transformed into beautiful piece of art. Rasping, shaping up, polishing, finishing and then preserving these pieces is a difficult task and is done with complete devotion.
